Play digital ps4 games on ps5

Sony has confirmed that PS4 games will be playable on the PS5, meaning that the PlayStation 5 is backwards compatible with the PS4. This means that you’ll be able to download games that you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store on PS4 and play them on the PS5. You’ll also be able to insert physical PS4 discs into the PS5 and play them on the next-gen console.

physical PS4 game discs will play on PS5. You'll be able to insert physical PS4 game discs into the PS5 and play them, as well as download digital software you've purchased from the PlayStation Store.

Sony has said that PlayStation VR will be fully backwards compatible with the PS5, meaning that you’ll be able to plug your current headset into the next-gen console and experience virtual reality. As the PlayStation 5 is also backwards compatible with PS4 software, this means that you’ll be able to play PSVR games on the PS5 – regardless of whether you own them digitally or physically.

Sony has also assured it has already tested "hundreds of titles" and will be testing "thousands more as we move toward launch".

The short answer is that almost all your PS4 games should work on PS5 from day one.

I have a mostly digital library now--I know it was stated that PS4 discs will be backwards compatible on PS5, but has anybody heard anything that I may have missed about transferring digital versions of PS4 games and playing them on the PS5?

Ps4 discs just hold the key.. the files are exactly the same. There is no reason it wouldnt work with a digital libary.

Sony is pushing psn and ps now as well.

Wouldn’t even be surprised if you can transfer PS4 cloud saves too but I’d be shocked if digital games are not backwards compatible as well.

This is a really good question and I don't understand why people are just assuming digital libraries will transfer.

Plenty of money was made selling remasters of earlier gen games on PS4. Add to that how much Sony continues to push the Now service at a not very good price point and despite it's failure to catch on. All while Xbox already has backwards compatible and a ton of older games for free. Sony seems to care less about public sentiment than continuing to make money on these old titles.

Im really hoping i can play owned digital games on the next gen

I really don’t see a reason not to allow players who already spent money on games to play them on a newer system
